Having moved plenty of people to a basement flat, we’re aware that sometimes they can appear very dark. Outside fencing, pavements, thin windows and vegetation can obstruct the amount of light that gets into your apartment. Unless you are a vampire, this isn’t the most pleasant of habitats. Don’t fear, for My House Removals have drummed up a few ideas to brighten up your downstairs apartment.
Mirrors: A Basement’s Best Friend
Through the clever positioning of mirrors, you can bounce light all around your downstairs apartment. You could either get a couple of big framed mirrors, or find half a dozen small ones from a charity shop. Place them strategically around your basement flat so that everywhere has a mirror in view. You’ll find that not only does this promote light, it also makes your flat look more spacious. Win win!
Invest In Good Daylight Bulbs
Daylight bulbs are a must for those living in a basement flat. The cooler, more natural hues help make up for the lack of sunlight in your apartment. Not only do they look much better, they also help remedy SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder, in which people get the blues when they’re not taking in adequate sunlight.
Reexamine The Curtains
Do you have big, heavy, cumbersome curtains? Window space is precious, and loose fabric that’s obstructing the glass is not welcome. If you don’t want to part with your curtains, you can tie them back (thoroughly) to ensure no curtain is getting in the way of your light.
Better still, you could remove the curtains altogether and replace them with blinds. Blinds are great because when they’re up, you hardly notice them at all. They’ll help open the space and make the window area look much brighter. On the other hand, blinds are not as a warm as curtains, so you’ll have to factor this is in if you’re in a chilly place.
Some people quite rightly draw the curtains to protect their privacy. If this is you, consider investing in some net curtains. They’ll stop prying eyes from looking into your flat, but they’ll let a lot more light in and make the place brighter.
