Cleaning An Empty Property Quickly

Whether you rent or own a property, when moving in house in York it’s always good practice to leave the property clean and tidy. You should always leave the empty property in the condition you found it or better, so the next tenants or owners can move in without worrying about cleaning.
There’s little worse than moving into a property only to find the cupboards are dirty and the whole place needs sterilising before anything can be unpacked. You know moving day is exhausting enough without this task.
We do of course offer an end of tenancy cleaning service that is affordable and easy to book, however if you want to keep costs to an absolute minimum here are some tips on how to clean up quickly.
Clean as You Go
One way to clean a house from top to bottom is to clean as you go. Even the tidiest person will be surprised with the dust underneath a bed, or the splatters on a skirting board behind the kitchen bin. This method works for many people but isn’t the quickest at all which is why we recommend you:
Wait Until the Property is Empty
Removals by their very nature are messy. You’ll find you have scraps of newspaper, sellotape, empty boxes and unwanted items all over the property. Add to this the footprints of many people walking in and out and you are left with quite a mess. Our removals firm in York always makes sure your carpets are never damaged and no packing debris is left behind, yet with every removal there can be residual dirt.
By waiting until the property is empty you can survey the whole home. You won’t have to clean any area twice and you can tackle it room by room, closing the door and saying goodbye once you’re done.
Your Cleaning Inventory
You’ll need some items close at hand ready to clean your property such as:
- A washing up bowl
- Bucket
- Mop
- Bleach
- Disinfectant
- Shake n Vac
- Polish
- Window Cleaner
- Kitchen Roll
- Old Towels
- Old Sheets
- Bathroom Mousse
- Sponges
- Cloths
- Dusters
- Get Wet
Skirting boards are usually one of the main items to clean, as they can accumulate quite a lot of dirt over the years. For any surface that does allow water, simply make a soapy solution with hot water and use a sponge to wash the skirting and surfaces. Have someone follow you with an old towel. You wash, they dry. This method ensures any room takes no longer than 20 minutes. If you do find ground on dirt, the hot water should soften it for shifting, or the abrasive nature of the towel will.
See Clearly
Many people have their own ways of cleaning windows and glass yet the quickest way is actually very simple. Use shower shine, not glass cleaner. It is wetter and better at providing a streak free finish. It’s also a little stronger as it is formulated to tackle soap scum too.
Spray then use kitchen roll to wipe off. That’s it. As long as you always use a clean, never used before cloth or paper towel to wipe the windows, you won’t have any streaks.
Bathrooms
Now the property is empty you can spray all toilets, sinks, showers and baths with a mousse as you don’t have to worry about shower gels and toiletries stored on the side. Simply spray and then rinse and finish with a clean towel to dry.
Then you just have to polish wooden surfaces and vacuum the rooms and you’re done. (Assuming your cooker is clean!)
With extra care, your house move will feel that little bit cleaner and complete. In spite of this, you mustn’t blame yourself for any fair wear and tear that occurs. Tenants wishing to reclaim their damage deposits are advised to look into this, so that an amicable resolution can be made with the landlord.
